COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING The Peninsula County Council held its ■monthly meeting yesterday at Porbohello. Present were the chairman (Cr It. Macandrew), and Crs J. Cross, W. D. Stewart, J. T. Irvine, T. S. Edwards, £f. J. Nyhon, J. Hellyer, J. B. Harbrow, and D, J. S, Robertson. CORRESPONDENCE. r Advice that it was prepared to take charge of a petition dealing with a sanitary service in the district was received from the committee of the Northeast Harbour Ratepayers’ Association. This step would be undertaken provided {that the petition outlined the approximate rate or cost_ of operating the scheme.- The association desired that the area at the rear of its hall _be cleaned up by unemployed labour immediately, and also requested the council to have Marion street classed as lit for vehicular traffic.—Cr Hellyer said the approximate annual_ cost per ratepayer for participation in the sanitary service would ho 30s.—The second request was acceded to, and the third, declined. —The meeting resolved to consider fully the question of the sanitary undertaking at the next meeting. Application for the formation of an fentrance leading to his property at Broad Bay and also for tho installation of an electric light at the entrance was made by Mr P. Nielson, M.P.—Both requests were declined. Permission to lay a pipe-line along Larnach road was asked for by Mr W. Hitchcox, Grant’s Braes.—Granted, subject to the usual conditions. In order to assist it in promoting the welfare of tho province, tho Otago Expansion League applied for a donation to its funds.—Received. The council’s attention was drawn to tho amount of surface water flowing from the high road through Mr W. Ridley’s property on to section 88, M'Auley road, Scatoun. in a letter from Mrs E. Bowles, who asked that measures bo taken to divert the water. — Referred to the engineer for a report. A license to sell confectionery from a moveable stall at St. Kilda Beach was asked for by Mr D. H. Blacks, Caversham. The applicant stated that the stall had been passed by the Health Department as suitable for tho purpose.— The license was granted. The poor state of the road leading to the Masonic Hall at Portobello, with a request that it be repaired immediately, was referred to in a letter from the Lodge Peninsula Kilwinning.—Referred to the engineer for attention. A complaint was received from the Post and Telegraph Department in connection with the telephonic interruption caused by trees fronting Mr J. Jackson Purdie’s property, Highcliff. The council was asked to have the trees cut back.—Referred to the engineer with power to act. Plans and building-line undertakings for portions of Leith Walk, and also Scott and Forth streets, Portobello. were forwarded by Messrs M’George and Gordon, surveyors, Dunedin, who asked the council to take steps to have these streets exempted from the provisions of a section of the Public Works Act.— Exemption was granted. The Secretary of the “ Just for Luck ” art union forwarded a cheque for £l4, to be used for the general relief of distress at Portobello.—Received.
An application to install a hanging verandah in front of his premises, Macandrew Bay, was received from Mr W. T. Rowlands.—The application was granted, the work to be carried out under the supervision of the building inspector.
Mr J. E. Davis, Sandymount, asked the Council to remove a blockage in a culvert approaching his property.—Referred to the member for the riding (Cr Stewart). The removal of the remainder of a slip in Camp road as soon as possible was requested by Messrs J. B. Black and J. B. Thomson.—Referred to the engineer. CYCLING ON FOOTPATHS. “ The only way to enforce the by-law is to catch the delinquents and prosecute them,” remarked the Chairman, when Cr Harbrow complained of the prevalence of the riding of bicycles on footpaths in the Tomahawk riding. Cr Harbrow added that police intervention to alleviate this menace to pedestrians had been necessitated lately. It was decided, on the motion of Cr Robertson, to erect sign-posts at each end of the riding warning cyclists that they were liable to prosecution for using the paths. RANGER’S REPORT. The county ranger (Mr E. Campbell) reported that he had found 11 head of cattle wandering on county roads during September. The report was adopted. FINANCE. The following financial statement, embodying the position of the various ridings in the county, was placed before the meeting:—-Otago Heads, £27 17s Gd (debit) ; Sandymount, £ll9 18s 5d (credit) ; Highcliff, £l7l 6s 8d (credit) : Tomahawk, £lO 19s Id (credit) ; Northeast Harbour, £95 7s 7d (credit) ; Broad Bay, £SO Is 9d (credit); Portobello, £143 10s lOd (debit). The credit balance totalled £276 5s 2d. The cash balance was £l2B 12s; accounts to be passed for payment were £2,186 17s 9d; accounts already passed for payment were £1,062 Is 7d; the debit balance totalled £996 4s 2d. Amounts owing to the council were;— Relief pay, £341; arrears of rates, £350; highways subsidy, £1,000; Beach road, £228. The statement was adopted.
