CROSS-COUNTRY RACES

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS' HIGH SCHOOL FINE EFFORT BV P. CANTER The annual senior ami junior crosscountry races of the Christian Brothers’ High School wore decided yesterday afternoon over a three-mile course at St. Kilda, the junior event (under 14) being contested hy 133 runners, while the senior attracted a field of 55 runners. The feature of the senior race was the fine performance put np hy a 14-year-old competitor, Pat Canter, who put np fastest time in finishing in eleventh position. His time was 18min 27sec, and, considering the fact that the course was not in the best of order, this was a particularly good run, and represented an improvement of flsec on the time put up by Canter in establishing a junior record last year.

D. Ryan and ,A. Stafford"' ,tied for second fastest time with 18mm 31seo; and F. Miles, who-‘established a record for the course of 16min SOsec last year, could fill only fourth fastest time with 18min 34sec. 1 The senior race was won by P. horcl, who was off the limit of 4min. He ran a good race, and tho finish was contested by a whole bunch of boys on the same mark,- Ford getting the verdict'by a narrow margin from H. Holden (4min) and J. Holmes The winner’s actual time was 20min 7sec. The junior race was won by a small Standard HI. boy, E. Fitzgerald, who was off 4Jmin. He completed the course in 21min 4sec, a remarkable effort. R. O’Connell (24min) ran a fine race for second place in 19min 30sec, and third place went to R. Wilson (3min) in 20min Ssec.

Fastest time in the junior race was won by 8., Mears, who finished fifth off the 2min mark. He ran a very good race, his time being 19min 17see. K. Smith (2min) also registered a good performance to finish sixth and take second fastest time in 19min 27sec, R. O’Connell securing third fastest time. The race was ably controlled under the direction of Rev. Bro. Ryan and Rev. Bro. Beeden, those officiating including members of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association and of the St. Patrick’s Harrier, and Amateur Athletic Club. Results:— SENIOR. P.
