WATER MAIN EXTENSIONS

PIPE LINE AT BURNS GREEK The Water Committee will recommend to the City Council at its meeting on Monday night that authority be granted to proceed with extensions to the water main reticulation as follows i—Sturdee street, 15 chains length, estimated cost £196 ss; Jutland street, 3J chains, £69; and Devon _ street, 9j chains, £lB7 10s. The cost is provided for in the current year’s estimates.

The committee recommends that authority be granted to proceed with the renewal of the pipe line—2,9ooft in length—from the break pressure tank below the intake at Burns Creek to the tank at Williams Creek. This line was originally laid in 18in earthenware pipes, and, as a result of trouble experienced with sliding country on parts of the line, a length of 985 ft was subsequently replaced in 15in- diameter second-hand steel pipes. The latter are now badly affected by corrosion, and the earthenware pipe section has been considerably reduced in capacity by roots. The present proposal is to renew the whole line with steel pipes, at a total estimated cost of £2,538, which would be chargeable to the renewal fund. Tenders would need to be called for the pipes by public advertisement.

The city engineer’s report on the progress of works in connection with the Deep Creek water supply scheme show that during the period 113 ft of trenching. 171 ft of pipe laying, and 370 ft of backfilling were completed in section U. This section is now completed and ready to connect up to the Ross Creek control. The bypass round the Ross Creek reservoir is being continued. The erection of the control house has been commenced, and the old Din line from Wakari Creek has been salvaged.
