TOWN HALL TRANSFORMED

EXTENSIVE PREPARATIONS FOR ARTS BALL The fruits of several weeks of artistic labour were to be seen in the Town Hall this afternoon, when the various units of an extensive scheme of decorations were being placed in position in readiness for the Arts Ball this evening. A small army of workers under the direction of Sir Charlton Edgar, who was responsible for the planning of the decorations, was very busy converting a normally sedate hall into a riot of colour. Very_ modern in conception and incorporating almost every possible shade ana tone of colour, this embellishment is characterised by lively imagination.

Towering above the stage to a height of 30ft, a huge set-piece dominates the scena, and each of the architectural panels around the hall, both beneath and above the dress circle, contains a large and colourful mural, each of which depicts a national dance in progress. In the centre of the floor a huge revolving and attractively illuminated champagne glass, lift in height, will be filled with balloons and surrounded by cut-outs of dancing figures. Huge buckets containing more balloons, to be tipped out in the course of the evening, are suspended from the ceiling, amidst a galaxy r.f graceful paper streamers. Special wiring was necessary for the lighting arrangements, which make use of every colour except white, and which include special mercury vapour lamps to throw red and green beams across the ceiling. The foyer of the Town Hall has been turned into a verdant garden, with the profuse use of garlands, green foliage, and flowers. In obtaining such a carnival atmosphere. Mr Edgar has been assisted by the Misses Elizabeth Begg, Ann Hamblett, and Doris Lusk, and other students of the Art School.
