EXTERMINATION OF MOA

GOURD A POLYNESIAN PRODUCT In reference to Dr Clark’s reported statement, Mr H. D. Skinner, lecturer in anthropology at the Otago University Museum, said there was no doubt whatever that the moa existed in interMaori times, and that several species of moa were exterminated by the Maoris. There was a large amount of evidence available on the point to anyone who visited the Otago Museum or read the published literature on the subject. In fact, the matter did not admit of discussion. He held the view that the moa was killed off quite a long time before the Europeans settled in New Zealand, and suggested that the date for Otago was about two centuries ago. Extermination in the Napier district had been completed a good dealearlier. If the gourd was actually in association with the egg, as suggested, the point was of considerable interest, ns the gourd was a thoroughly typical Polynesian product. Local knowledge of the culture of the moa hunters was duo principally to the work of Mr David Teviotdale, a member of the museum’s staff. >
