DAFFODIL CHAMPIONSHIPS MANY OUTSTANDING BLOOMS Many varieties of his own raising ■were included in the collection which won the open daffodil championship for Mr J. T. Gray at the Dunedin Horticultural Society’s spring show yesterday afternoon. In the amateur daffodil classes a larger number of competitors was forward than has been the case for many years. The amateur championship was Avon by Mr James Nelson, with Dr Johnstone, of Owaka, second; Mr J. Masterton won the competition for nine varieties. The champion of champions daffodil in the show was a beautiful bloom of Hethel, one of the fine white Barrjis, raised by Mr J. T. Gray. Mr 0. B. Hall’s Royalist, a very fine yellow trumpet, secured premier ticket in its section, and Mr T. G. Anderson was awarded the premier ticket in the white trumpet class with a lovely bloom of Beersheeba. Mr J. T, Gray annexed both A and B Incomps, premierships with one of his seedlings and a beautiful bloom of Maura respectively, the second bloom also winning the Arthur Barnett Challenge Cup for the finest seedling daffodil in the show. Geralda, another of Mr Gray’s seedlings Avon for him the premier ticket in a class for Barriis 3A. Mr K. B. Burns, of Mount Ross, staged a premier Giant Leedsii, Margaret Simpson, while in the small cup Leedsii section Mr J. T. Gray collected another premier award with one more of his seedlings. Mr C. B. Hall had the premier bloom in the Poetaz section with Glorious, also Avinning the premier “ double ” with Lady Sweetonham. Mr J. Abernethy showed the premier Poeticus, a nice bloom of Matthew Arnold.
