Eight years after he had absconded from bail at Christchurch, William Joseph Fox, known in Taranaki as I John Baden Welsh, was arrested at Whangamomona early this week. Ho j appeared in court at New Plymouth toI day to answer tho original charge that at Christchurch on February 2, 1928, ho stole a trotting sulky and harness valued at £l2 from Samuel Bennett. Fox then called himself John Blake Keenan. After his release on bail Fox disappeared. Ho visited Australia, but returned to New Zealand, and for some years has been managing a farm at Whangamomona. His employer spoke highly of him, and offered to retain his services. Fox was a married man with three children. Counsel said there was a possibility of a sound defence to the charge, but in view of his circumstances Fox threw himself on the mercy of the court. Tho court gran led probation for 12 months, and ordered restitution of ;€o.
