SPRING MEETING OPENED PAPER SLIPPER WINS ELECTRIC HANDICAP The slight shower this morning did not affect the track at Wingatui, which was in excellent order, but slightly slow, for the opening of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting. There was a drizzle of rain, but the temperature was very mild. The attendance was good, and included a large number of visitors from both Canterbury and Southland. After the wet spring the course and its surroundings looked beautifully fresh, and there was a fairly good show of spring flowers in the gardens. SPRING HURDLE HANDICAP, ISOsovs, second 22, third 8. Also started: 4-4 Santoft 10.8 (R. Register), 6-7 Wexford Bridge 9.12 (H. Turner), 2-1 Royal Pal 9.7 (V. Langford), 7-6 Chrysology 9.0 (W. Cooper). Golden Lap led over the first hurdle, where Chrysology ran off and fell over the wing. Golden Lap was two lengths clear of Royal Pal and Polyflora at the hurdle opposite the stand. Polydora and Santoft were both making bad jumps. Golden Lap led into the back straight, and at the hurdle near the five-furlong post Royal Pal fell. Golden Lap was just clear of Santoft and Wexford Bridge as they made round the far turn, and was first into the straight. In the last furlong, however, Redolent came up to beat him home by three lengths. Polydora, who jumped badly throughout the race, was four lengths away third, a neck in front of Wexford Bridge. The riders on Chrysology and Royal Pal were not hurt.

At the far turn Thermidor was half a length clear of Gold Boa, Rodeur, and Autumn Wind. Racing up the rise Gold Boa went to the lead, a length and a-half in front of Thermidor, La France, and Autumn Wind. Gold Boa was first into the straight, just ahead of Autumn Wind, with Thermidor, Rodeur, and La France handy. At the distance Autumn Wind took charge from Gold Boa and beat him home by three-quarters of a length, with Rodeur two lengths away third. Thermidor (fourth) and Costume were two lengths further back.

Greek Gold was the slowest out, and Pelmet led from Cheap Money, Capital, and Paper Slipper. Pelmet was still in sharge at the far turn from Paper Slipper, Wild_ Career, and Bay Duke. Pelmet led into the« straight from Paper Slipper, Wild Career, and Capital. At the distance Paper Slipper came through and won comfortably.
