SWIMMING CONTROL

CHANGE OF HEADQUARTERS OPPOSED COUNCIL'S ADMINISTRATION CRITICISED The transfer of the headquarters of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association from Christchurch was opposed by delegates at the annual meeting of the Auckland Centre last week. The question as to whether a change of location was desirable, however, caused criticism of the council’s administration (says the Auckland ‘Herald’), The discussion took place in consequence of the Otago Centre’s suggestion that, as the New Zealand Council had not done enough to encourage swimming, the headquarters of the association should be removed from Christchurch. Assertions made by the Otago Centre in support of its action were denied by the council in a statement detailing its activities. The council claimed that it had persistently endeavoured to arrange tours of New Zealand by overseas champions, and to obtain financial assistance from the Government toward the teaching of swim, ming. Furthermore, it had, when refused a grant by tho last Government, transferred several hundred pounds to the educational account, with the object of facilitating the instruction work, Mr J. Enwright moved that the centre should express its full confidence in the council. This was opposed byMessrs R. Moore and L. J. Kenny, who recalled the Auckland Centre’s protests in the past against the council’s laxity in replying to correspondence. Air L. All in ro said there was apparently a need for improvement on tho council’s part, and he advised tho centre not to commit itself either way. Its reply should be couched in sucli terms that the council would realise more was expected of it. The meeting unanimously disapproved of a change in the headquarters. It was agreed that the council should be informed of the centre’s opinion that its affairs had been lax during tho past two years, and that the centre hoped for an improvement in future administration.
