WEST HARBOUR COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council was held last night. Pr jsent were the Mayor (Mr A. Smith), Crs J. M. M‘Kay, J. L. Page, P. H. Davis, E. L. Monk, E. H. Hudson, J. Robb, W. Forgie, and E. W. Venn. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr W. Booth was carried. CORRESPONDENCE. The Commissioner of Transport forwarded particulars of the new speeds for heavy motor vehicles, and of the draft traffic regulations.—Tho letter was received, and .it was decided to protest against the speed for heavy traffic vehicles on the Dunedin-Ravens-bounie road. An application from the secretary of tho St. Leonards School Committee for an unemployed man to carry out work in the school grounds was granted. The Secretary of the Ravensbourne Cricket Club made application for assistance from the council.—The Clerk reported that two men were at present putting the ground in good condition. The Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department intimated that the proceeds_ from last year’s health stamp campaign were £11,793 18s Bd. He added that this year’s campaign would commence on November 2, and asked the council to give as much assistance as possible.—lt was resolved to purchase £2 worth of the stamps. The Health Inspector reported that there had been one case of scarlet fever in Ravensbourne during the month.— Noted. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that the expenditure for the month totalled £769 19s 9d and the receipts £1,003 8s Id. There remained a debit balance of £134 19s 3d. The report was adopted, and accounts amounting to £234 Is 5d were passed for payment. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector (Mr W. Connor) reported that the following work had been carried out in the borough during tho month: — , A fence has been erected and the road partly formed at Bell’s property. Repairs have been effected to the road at Blanket Bay, Burkes, and Maia, and the potholes have been filled in from the quarry to Cook’s and St. Leonards. View street (Burkes) has been finished, and some of the side streets have also been cleaned at Burkes, at St. Leonards, and on the main road from Burkes to Maia. The culvert at Thornicroft’s has been_ repaired, and the paddock of Smith’s cleaned. Work is going on in Manuka street and Ravensbourne road, and Hill street is being cleaned. The footpath has been repaired in District road. The drain at Montague street has been repaired. Tlie following work remains to be done as passed by the council;—The drains are to be laid at Ascog road and Burkes. Concrete walls are to be erected in the creek at St. Leonards, and at the Recreation Ground. The roadway into the Recreation Ground is to be done. The fire brigade shed has to be erected. The road into'Bell’s is to he continued. The St. Leonards School ground remains to bo graded. The report was adopted.
