GREEN ISLAND AFFAIRS

COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING The* monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council -was held last evening. The mayor (Mr T. M. M'Ahan) was in the chair, and others present were Messrs T. G. Tomkins, _J. C. Russell, A. D. M‘Gregor, W. Dickinson, V. P, Pringle, and W. 0. Smellie. WORKS COMMITTEE, The Works Committee recommended that the engineer attend to the following:—Formation of entrance to property of 0. H. Jarvis, Alexander street; drainage at rear of the Green Island School; drainage at top end of Miller street and entrance to property of G. 0. Matthews; that permission be granted to Mr A. J. Haynes, Scotland Terrace, to cut hack frontage of his property, work to be carried out to the satisfaction of the engineer; that application from Mr D. Smaill for grazing right on Earl street be declined, and a notice be erected on the James street tip prohibiting entrance on to the tip by unauthorised persona. The practice of building contractors in commencing the erection of buildings before permits were granted was the ■object of comment by Cr Dickinson, who said that this practice was wrong, and the council should take some steps in the matter. Councillors agreed that no building operations should be commenced before permits were issued. The subject was then dropped, no action being taken. _ The recommendations were adopted. WATER AND LIGHTING. The Water and Lighting Committee recommended that the offer of the Taieri County to pay half the cost of installation of light at Sunnyvale be accepted; that lights be installed in Edinburgh street, Scotland Terrace, main road (between Quarry road and Edinburgh street), corner Westland street and Abbotsford road; that future supplies to the Taieri County be given subject to the condition that the continuance of such supplies shall be at the pleasure of the council. The recommendations were adopted, and the recommendation with regard to the installation of a light at Sunnyvale was referred back to the committee. Cr Pringle stated that before giving water to anyone outside the committee should first look after its own ratepayers. On Monday there was a shortage of water in some parts of the borough for washing purposes. Cr Smellie said the committee was fully alive to_ the position and that he knew something must be done in this connection in the future. FINANCE. The finance committee recommended that the council adhere to its previous decision in regard to contributing towards the funds of the Otago Expansion League,

The recommendation was adopted, and accounts totalling £2,268 13s lid were passed for payment. DRAINAGE. The Drainage Committee recommended that the town clerk ascertain the position in regard to the rate of pay and hours of work for drainage employees and permanent _ employees, and that a visit of inspection be paid the drainage works on Thursday, October 22. The recommendations were adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer’s report stated that some repair work had been done on Lookout Point hill, the shoulders being repaired and the edges of the bitumen trimmed up. The balance of the highway required repairs, some potholes having developed, and these would be put in hand during the incoming period. The Kaikorai Valley highway had been and some toppings had been spread on it. It developed corrugations quickly, and sealing would be the only method of overcoming the difficulty. Building permits issued during the month totalled £2,077. The drain crossing Toignmouth street near its intersection with Paterson street collapsed when a loaded motor lorry passed over it. but the culvert had now been repaired. The Kaikorai Valley road from Short street to the bridge had been graded and screenings had been spread. It was now in fair order. In Quarry road the metalling and blinding had been completed. In Princes street the road has been graded from the railway bridge in Earl street to the road bridge near the Green Island station, and metal had been spread and blinded in the worst places. In Harraway road and in Earl street screenings had been spread on bad portions. In Lethaby street ashes had been spread to Peterson’s property. In Alexander and Exmouth streets gravel had been spread on the footpaths, but there had been no opportunity of comEleting the roadway in Exraouth street etween Teignmouth and Alexander streets. Other _ work attended to had been the cleaning of water tables in London, Derby, Runciman, Torquay, Exmouth, and Brown streets. Rubble drains had been built on the footpath in Church street and also in Derby street. Refuse was removed from the Main road, Sunnyvale, Alexander, Torquay, Binnie, Derby, and Edinburgh streets. At the corner of Church and London streets the culvert had been repaired. Sand had been spread on footpaths on the main road where the tar had not set. The estimated cost or reading, storm water drainage, foul sewers, and water reticulation to the proposed subdivision of the township of Abbotsford which adjoined the borough, would he £1,212 5s 5d for new streets, £2,610 7s 5d for drainage and sewerage, and £1,282 for Thompson street, a total cost of £5,104 12s lOd. The report was adopted, with a provision that a special meeting of the council bo called to consider the last question. HEALTH STAMPS. II was decided to support the health stamp campaign by buying £lO worth of .stamps.
