Ono of the largest easts yet a 3 ', somhled for tho fortnightly reading of ■e Playbox Club took part in the final three-act play reading of the season last night, when Mr Russell-Wood presented Eden Philpott’s rustic comedy, ‘ The Farmer’s Wife,’ before a large and most responsive audience. This is, perhaps, the best known of

Air Philpott’s comedies, and contains some splendid character parts and a great amount of wholesome humour. Some of the young players were very well made up, and characterisation was, in some instances, every well sustained. although there seemed to be a great variety of dialects among the readers, some being more redolent of the Emerald Isle than the moors of Dartmoor; However, it was a most enjoyable entertainment, and the audience was kept in a simmer of merriment from the outset. As the farmer, Samuel Sweetland, whose vicissitudes in the matrimonial market provide the amusing plot, Mr Jim Tannock gave a highly diverting performance, reading the part of the genial, tactless character with unswerving success, thereby contributing in a largo measure towards the general success of tEa play. Another interesting study came from Air L. Manning, in the part of old Chnrdlcs Ash. Jl was a picturesquely droll characterisation. Among the women in the east, pride of place goes to Aliss Una Ferry, whose work in the part of Aliss Thirza Tapper was very amusing and artistic. AVith many touches of humour in voice and gesture Aliss Ferry sustained the character very well. Miss Alaisie Hill did some effective work as the domestic, Araminta Dench, and Airs J. L, Anderson read the hysterical postmistress, Alary Hearn, with some spirit. Miss Edith Claire was quietly efficient as Sibley Sweetland, her singing in the party scene lending additional attrac tion to her performance. Good work ill a small part was done by Air Inn Al'Narey as an old man. Other parts were taken by Airs T. Nelson (Pei.m----nell), Aliss Dorothy Whyte (Sophie Smcavdon), Aliss Doris Necs (Airs Snioardonl, Aliss Elsa Jacobs (Susan Maine), Aliss G. Allen (Louisa Winden tt), Air J. Walker (Dumiybrigl, Alastcr Frank Ponton (Teddy Smeardon). Air Bernard Falck (Dr'RuudleL Air G. C. Abbott (Rev. Tudor), I). Hancock (George Smeardon), Mr John Green (Richard Conker). 'Dio play was introduced by Aliss Dorothy Whyte, and the hostesses at supper were Alisses Noelino Parker, Jean Pickard, and AI. Etheridge. Concert Chamber Dance.
