SWIMMING

AUSTRALIANS FOR BALGLUTHA Advice was received by the Otago Swimming Centre to-day that the Balclutha Amateur, Swimming Club had accepted an appearance from the Australian swimming team at the end of November or early in December, and the club’s guarantee has been forwarded. The Australians will visit Balclutha on a week day to be arranged, and, besides giving demonstrations and coaching during the day, will appear at a carnival in the afternoon and evening. Appearances have now been accepted by the Southland and Otago Centres, Balclutha Club, Alexandra Club (where the Australians are to appear at a Saturday afternoon carnival), Oamnru Club, and Temuka and Westport Clubs. Replies are still awaited from the Ashburton, Canterbury, and Wellington Centres, but the arrangements should bo almost complete by the time of the Otago Centre’s annual meeting on Monday night. KIWI CLUB’S PARENTS’ NIGHT. A most successful function was arranged by the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club at its dub hour last night, the meeting taking the form of a parents’ night, several more of which are to be held during the season. There was a large attendance of supporters of the club, and, by the efforts of fhe club captains (Miss M. Boulton and Mr A. Thomas) and of Mr A. Greig, a fine display was arranged, the programme comprising exhibitions by the youngest members of the club who had learnt to swim ouly_ recently, these being followed by displays of the various strokes by more advanced performers, and exhibitions of the racing strokes by wellknown champions. A display of diving was also given, while in one section of the baths the usual coaching activities were carried out.

Following the club hour, the visitors were entertained at supper in the club rooms by the Ladies’ Committee.
