THEORIES OF THE STATE INTERESTING DISPLAY AT LIBRARY The display in the lending department of the Public Library is this week devoted to theories of the State, with particular reference to Fascism. The most exhaustive study of Fascism is made by R. Palm Dutt in ‘ Fascism and Social Revolution,’ in which the author examines the history of Fascism and comes to the conclusion that Fascism is the last desperate measure of a capitalist system in decay to prolong its existence. John Sfrachcy's 4 The Monaco of Fascism ’ devotes attention to the danger of Fascism in Britain. 4 Christianity and the Social Revolution,’ by various writers, examines Fascism and Communism from the viewpoint of religious men, and comes to a conclusion condemning Fascism. ‘ The Yellow Spot ’ is an account of the persecution of Jews in Fascist Germany, drawn up from accounts in German newspapers, and has a splendid introduction by the Bishop of Durham. Other books attacking Fascism are 4 Hitler over Europe,’ by Henri; ‘ Sawdust Ca?sar,’ by George Seldes; ‘ Enter Mussolini,’ by Emilio Lussu; and passages in ‘ Quack, .Quack,’ by Leonard Wolf, and in J. F. Hecker’s 4 Communist Answer to the World’s Needs.’ Books favourable to Fascism are 4 8.U.F.,’ Oswald Mosley, and 4 British Fascism,’ by James Drennan; 1 Fascism,’ by J. S. Barnes; ‘ My Autobiography,’ by Benito Mussolini; ‘ Fascism, Doctrine and Institutions,’ by Benito Mussolini; ‘My Struggle,’ by Adolf Hiflcr; ‘ Mussolini’s Italy,’ by Herman Finer; ‘ Germany Reborn,’ by Goering; and ‘ The Fascist Experiment,’ by Luigi Villari. Other books dealing with Fascism are ‘ Literature and Dialectical Materialism,’ by John Strachcy, in which he criticises certain writers, whom he thinks have Fascism tendencies; 4 Europe Under the Terror,’ by John Spivak, an account of what is happening in Fascist countries, by a leading American journalist; 4 Fires Underground,’ by Heinz Liepmann, being an account of illegal opposition to Fascism in Germany; and the novels ‘ The Oppermans ’ (by Feuchtwanger), ‘Days of Contempt’ (by Malraux), 4 Fontamara ’ (by Ggnazio Silone), and ‘lt Can’t Happen Hero ’ (by Sinclair Lewis). Of works of democracy the following are important:—‘ Democracy in Crisis,’ by H. J. Laski; 4 Democracy,’ by C. Delisle Burns; 4 A Short History of Democracy,’ by Hattcrsly; and 4 In Defence of Democracy,’ by J. S. Fulton and C. R. Morris. Socialist theories of the State are given in 4 The State and Revolution,’ by V. 1. Lenin; 4 The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State,’ by Engels (in the 4 Handbook of Marxism’); 4 A Survey 'of Socialism/ by Hearnshaw; 4 Communism,’ by H. J. Laski; 4 The Simple Case for Socialism,’ by G. D. H. Cole; 4 Socialism Plus,’ by J. P. Hastings, a New Zealand writer; and 4 The State in Theory and Practice,’ by H. J. Laski. The Catholic social view is represented by 4 The Christian Social Manifesto,’ by Husslcin; Henry Somerville’s 4 Studies in the Catholic Social Movement.’; .and...- 4 Religion and the Modern State,’ by Christopher Dawson. Other works on the theory of the State are: 4 Government in Transition,’ by Lord Eustace Percy; 4 The Modern State,’ by Maclver; 4 The Philosophical Theory of the State,’ by Bosanquot; 4 The Metaphysical Theory of the State,’ by Hobhouse.
