DYING RESCUER'S CRY
Within a few minutes of saving • bather from drowning off Eling Quay, Southampton, recently, Captain John William Cronan, last of the River Test pilots, was dead. Captain Cronan, who was 65, lived at Tottan, and in his day, had saved hundreds of people. He was in his rowing boat when he heard a shout for help from James Stebbings, aged 20. Captain Cronan pulled to his assistance, dragged him on board, and rowed ashore. _ Then he collapsed and fell backward into the water.
