COLTS’ TEAM WITHDRAWN

SENIOR CRICKET CHI PETITION EARLIER HOURS OF PLAY There will ho no colts’ team in the Otago Cricket Association’s senior competition this season, a motion to this effect being carried at last night’s meeting of the association, which also resolved on October 17 as the date for the opening of the senior and intermediate competitions. .Mr F. N. Binnev presided over a good attendance. Mr J. A- Dunning moved that a colts’ team be not played this year. Last year there had been a close vote between Carisbrook B and the colts, and ho had voted for the colts. He had had to select the colts, and last year the clubs did not give the colts’ team the same support as they had done in the previous year. Mr A. G. Valentine said that the hoys in the eolts did not learn to play as'a team. They were not a team, for they belonged to" their respective clubs. The motion was canned. The Chairman said that it had already been decided that there should bo eight teams in the senior competition, and it was decided that the entries for the senior and intermediate competitions should be dealt with at the next meeting, these to close on October 12. COMPLETION OF MATCHES. Mr Howland moved that all two-day games be played to a definite fixture list, each side to complete an innings, and, if necessary, matches should be completed on a night during the week. Mr Howland added a proviso that in second grade A matches where Port Chalmers was concerned games should be played later in the season if necessary, Sir Howland said that his motion would apply to senior, intermediate, and second grade A matches. The motion was seconded by Mr Brinsley, who said that where the teams did not each complete an innings it was very unsatisfactory for a team which was in an overwhelming position to finish up with a draw. He was sure the motion would increase public interest in the matches. Mr R. 0. Talbot suggested that members of the University team might be handicapped by having to attend lectures during the week, and this might also apply to members of Carisbrook, Old Boys, and other clubs. Mr G. G. Austin said that University classes would be completed by the time the season started. Mr J. A. Hobson said that the question of grounds was a big consideration. It was often difficult enough to get the grounds ready for Saturday matches. Representative practices greatly interfered with club practices. Mr E. H. Ferguson suggested that an earlier start might be made, beginning the games at L. 30 and playing to 6.30, as was being done in Wellington. Mr G. R. Dickinson said he proposed that games should start at 1.30 The motion was carried with a proviso that suitable arrangements should be made concerning grounds. The details were loft to the Grade Committee to arrangq. SUB-COMMITTEES. Sub-committees were appointed as follows: . Management Committee. —Messrs A. H. Allen, F N. Binney, W. Brookes, E. H. The Secretary of tho Now Zealand Cricket Council enclosed a copy of a letter that the Management Committee had received from the Manawatu Cricket Association suggesting that a fifth P.lunket Shield team bo created in New Zealand the district to consist of the nine minor associations in tho Wellington cricket district, with headquarters at Palmerston North, Mr Rowland said that on the face of it it looked as if this was the case of a “ peeved province ” trying to get into tho Plmikot Shield competition. Tho Chairman said that the question was a big one, and one which would have far-reaching effects, especially so far as Otago was concerned, it was difficult enough to get a team away now, and it would he more difficult still with another team from tho North Island. Ho suggested that a committee he set up to consider the question and report later. The proposal would increase the association’s expenses considerably. A sub-committee comprising Messrs J. M. Fraser, If. 0. Talbot, -1. A. punning. and F. N. Binney was appointed to report on tho question to a later, meeting. INDIANS’ TOUR CANCELLED. The Secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council notified that the) proposed tour of Now Zealand by an Indian team had had to be cancelled. Matters of extreme difficulty arose in the Staff of Nnwanagar which made it impossibh for His Highness the Maharajah Jam sahib to carry out his proposed visit t( New Zealand. TONGA PARK. The High School Old Boys’ Cln 1 applied for the use of one senior wickc and one junior wicket at Tonga Part The Chairman explained that tho 01 Boys’ Club desired to take over th area vacated by Christian Brothers. Mr J. A. Robson said that Dnnod' had a largely increased members!) - ’ and would require a fairly large arc fra- their own practice wickets, In they would not offiect to Old B" - makiiuf use of the practice area alv Dunedin had taken their stand a Tonga Park in tho hone that th King’s H’gh School would mean a goc deal to the club, and ho hoped no nr due influence would be brought to he for them to .join tho Old Boys’ did He was sure the relations between Utwo clubs would bo most cordial. H moved that the application be granted Mr Valentine seconding the motion which was carried. OPENING OP COMPETITIONS. Mr E. H. Ferguson reported tha eight wickets would bo available foi October 17—six at Logan Park and

two at Tonga Park —which would enable them to begin senior and intermediate matches on that date. The other grades would begin on October 31. It was decided to open the senior and intermediate competitions on October 17, the hours of play being decided upon as from 1.30 p.m. to 0.30 p.m.

Mr A. Martin said he had been asked to bring forward a suggestion that a scries of Saturday matches should be arranged in Dunedin between teams from the various sub-associations, a combined team later to play a city team.
