COAL MINES IDLE
STRIKE AT TARATU \ NO SETTLEMENT REACHED No agreement in the dispute between the miners and the owners of the laratu Collieries had been reached up_ to noon to-day. The mines have been idle since Monday morning, when the miners held a stop-work meeting and decided to strike. The result a complete stoppage of coal production at the collieries. The adjoining mines at Kaitangata, however, are not affected by the dispute. Under the recent legislation of the Government the mines have been working, since July 1, under the terms, of the Arbitration Court award of 1931, under which increased wages applied to all employees. The former conditions of work were also reverted to. A few weeks ago application was made by the Taratu Miners’ Union for a new award, and the case was heard by the Conciliation Commissioner at Kaitangata on August 8. Certain demands, such as a sevenhour day and other important alterations in the working of coal mines, were referred, with the consent of all parties, to the Arbitration Court.
