POOR CATCHES
UNFAVOURABLE WEEK-END CONDITIONS ADVERSE WEATHER The majority of anglers who fished in and around Dunedin at the weekend were disappointed, mostly small bags being obtained. ■ One or two, however, met with more success, and caught well-conditioned trout to nil their bags within a hours. Southern districts experienced a, south-west wind, which did not tend to help the sport of the fishermen. On Friday the Pomahaka River was in excellent condition, one man taking the limit bag, but on Saturday it was rising and was becoming discoloured. The river is carrying a good stock of fish but the sport was rendered very difficult by the fact that Hie strong wind made it almost impossible to keep a fly on the water. It is reported that fair-sized fish were seen rising, but the best catch of a dozen was 241 b. Another party of three found a spot whica yielded 40 fish in two days. Both the fish and the baskets at Kaitangata were smaller than usual s» close to the opening of the season. Fishermen did not nave much luck, and the best catch reported was a six-pounder in good condition. Lake Mahinerangi was high before Sunday, and the fishing condition* were then good. By Sunday, however, angling was poor. , _ ' The Waikpuaiti and Shag River* were disappointing to sportsmen, pnncipally on account of the adverse “weather. Eleven fish were caught at Bushey on Friday night, and on Saturday morning one bag was taken from Munro’s Pool. On Saturday night, two, three, and four-pounder* were caught in the Waikouaiti, but anglers did not meet with much success there on Sunday. Both Silverstream and the Contour Channel provided poor sport, but the Otimata was more encouraging. Two fishermen caught a dozen each, one using the wet fly and the other the creeper. , . . _ , . Those who elected to visit Tomahawk Lagoon did not find fishing favourable, most of those caught being in poor condition. . At the week-end the vvaiwera vva* high and rising, and should be a profitable river later.
