MEMORIAL TABLET
ANDERSON'S BAY SCHOOL ■; “This is something we have- been wanting for a long time. It. is a memorial of which the school should be proud,” said Mr J. C. H. Somerville in unveiling a memorial tablet at the Anderson’s Bay School gymnasiuin yesterday afternoon on behalf of the Jtspupils’ Association. There was a large attendance of old! pupils, while children from the school were also present to witness the : unveiling of the tableda memorial to those who had served in the Great War. Approximately 180 names were on. the tablet, Zo of wnom. had been killed. Mr Somerville was in- the chair. _ In opening the ceremony Mr Somerville said that when collecting money for the school’s memorial arch in 192 J a proposal had been put forward to erect a memorial tablet. As a result of the work of an enthusiastic committee, under the chairmanship of Lieu-tenant-colonel J. G. Jeffery, sufficient money had been collected, whim what was believed) to be a complete . list of names of those who served in the-war was secured. The memorial was opened free of debt. , ’ The Rev. 6. H. Jupp then led the meeting in prayer. In unveiling the role of honour Mr W. T. Hildreth (president of the Expupils’ Association) spoke of the sacrifice of the old pupils who had left to fight for King and country. Many had made the supreme sacrifice, and the association felt that some lasting tribute was due to their memory. A list of the names of fallen soldiers was then read. Lieutenant-colonel Jeffery, on behalf of the returned soldiers of the district, returned thanks to those who were responsible for the erection of the tablet. He spoke of the necessity for proper defence. The outbreak of the Great War found New Zealand prepared with proper facilities for training young men, and he would like to see a return of those conditions.
