OTAGO RUGBY UNION
EASTERN DISTRICTS SECESSION DESIRE TO JOIN NORTH OTAGO Consideration was given at last night’s meeting of the Management Committee of tne Otago Rugby Union to tlie decision of the Eastern District Sub-nuion to secede from the Otago Union and to link np with the North Otago Union. Dr Perry presided. In reply to a request from the Otago Union, the Eastern District Sub-union forwarded a copy of the minutes of the meeting at which it was decided to secede from the Otago Union. It was pointed out that the decision had been reached by a meeting of club delegates and later approved by the Management Committee of the sub-union. The chief reason for the sub-union’s decision, as outlined in a previous letter on the subject, seemed to be that players in the Eastern District would have a greater opportunity for securing representative honours and the standard of play in the district would improve in consequence. A letter from the Dun-back-Macracs Club objected to the .subunion's decision, and complained that insufficient notice bad been given to the clulis to consider the position. In the discussion which followed it was pointed out that the Otago Union would have to give consideration to those clubs which did not approve of the sub-union’s decision. If the sub-union persisted with its demand for a change of affiliation the New Zealand Union would have to consider a change of boundaries, and that could only be done if the Otago Union approved. Some members resented the move by the subunion in view of the fact that the Otago Union had not had an opportunity to consider tha Eastern District’s grievances. The Otago Union was proud of its efforts on behalf of sub-unions. On the motion of Mr H. Harris it was decided to request the Management Committee of the Eastern District Union to hold another meeting of delegates to receive a deputation from the Otago Union. PANEL'RLY SHIELD VICTORY. Congratulations on Otago's winning the Rnnfurly Shield for the 1930 season were received from the West Coast, Southland, and Auckland Rugby Unions, the Otago Football Association, and the Otago Hockey Association.
