SOUTH OTAGO SCHOOLS

ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING KAITANGATA AND TUAPEKA MOUTH ANNEX TROPHIES The annual sports conducted under the auspices of the South Otago Primary Schools’ Sports Association were held at Balclutha on Saturday. The weather was fine, but a strong wind prevailed, and this slowed up the times somewhat. The entries were more numerous than last year, and 18 schools were represented. The programme was a lengthy one. but the officials worked in their usual methodical way, and the events were run off with promptness. Competition generally was good, and some very close finishes were seen, the running in particular being very interesting. Tho lumping was also fairly good, especially the hop, step, and jump, for hoys under 16. As a result of the day’s sport, Kaitangata School retained the shield, which it secured last year. Its total points tallied 91, with Balclutha School coming next with 61 points. The Country Cup for competition amongst two-teacher schools was won by Tuapeka Mouth School with a total of 42 points. One of the chief features of the day was the massed drill display by some (iOU children under the supervision of Mr A. P. Roydhouse, drill instructor to the Otago Education Board. The various evolutions were carried out with precision. It was remarkable to see the children carrying out their drill, and the display evoked round upon round of applause from the spectators. Prior to the drill display, the children of the various schools marched past the grand stand, tho names of the schools being announced by Mr Roydhouso. As the children passed the stand they were heartily applauded. Prior to tho presentation of the trophies the president of the South Otago Sports Association, Mr A. E Farrant, of Tuapeka Mouth, expressed, on behalf of the committee, appreciation to the parents for their support, to Mr Roydhouse for conducting the drill display, the Clutha and Matau A. and P. Society for the use of tho grounds and buildings, to the staff of tho Balclutha School for preparing the grounds, and to the visiting officials from Dunedin (Messrs John Ironside, vice-president, Clem Hill, E. Booth, and J. Clemons) for their assistance during the day. Mr farrant then called upon Mr Ironside to present the shield to Kaitanga-ta School. He apologised for the unavoidable absence of their president (Mr Bradstock), who was engaged on similar business at Timaru. Ho said lie was very pleased to present the shield, ns he had first started his school life in Balclutha. He congratulated all tho teams on the standard of efficiency shown, and on their sportsmanship generally. He congratulated the parents and the pupils on the fine display and. concluded by handing the shield to Mr A. Milne, head master of Kaitangata School. Mr Milne, in reply, complimented the other schools on tho fight they had put up. He praised his own pupils for tho way in which they had performed and the members of his stall for the work they had done in training the pupils for file sports. .He was pleased that tho school had won the shield again, and ho hoped they woujd win it again next year. If they did not, however, Kaitangata School would ho the first- to congratulate the winners. (Applause.) Mr Clem Hiil, of Dunedin, and at ono time of Balclutha, then presented tho Junior Cup to I'uapeka Mouth. He also extended congratulations to the winners and the runners-up (Stirling) ■Master G. Geddes accepted the cup on behalf of his school and briefly replied Cheers were given for winners and run-ners-up. The organisation of the spoils re fleeted great credit on the committee responsible, of which Mr G. H. Mitchell was superintendent and Mr D W. Kayo secretary. These two gentlemen had tho assistance of a strong body of workers, and everything wont off according to schedule, ami there was no hitch of any kind.
