INSTITUTE OF HORTICULTURE

EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Executive Council of the New -Zealand Institute of Horticulture was held recently at Wellington, when the following were present:—Dr N. R. B. Oliver (chairman), Mrs Knox Gilmer, Messrs Waugh, Hyde, and the secretary. Condolence was directed to be conveyed to the Southland District Council on the death of A. F. Hawke, In acknowledging 1 a copy of the judge’s report of the first competition, held at the Dunedin Horticultural Society’s autumn show, for the Bledisloe challenge cup, the following letter was received from Viscount Bledisloe:—“Many thanks for sending me a copy of Mr George M'lndoe’s most interesting _ and instructive report on his adjudication for the award of the Bledisloe Cup. I am particularly interested to note that Jonathans and Stunners continue to maintain their high quality and reputation—at least in the area of Central Otago.” Mr J. A. M'Pherson, Christchurch, reported that the working plan of the School of Horticulture had been prepared for later submission to the Ministers of the Crown concerned. It was reported that the recommended exemption of the institute’s horticultural students from the Wellington Labourers’ Union had not been agreed to and that registration of a separate union of nurserymen and gardeners had been refused 1 . It was decided that letters be sent to the Ministers of Labour, Education, and Agriculture, stressing the importance of the institute’s scheme of training and protesting against differential treatment to gardeners in Wellington as compared with other districts and urging exemption for students of the institute.
