ANOTHER CRASH
JOHANNESBURG AIR RAGE THE NEW ZEALANDER GLOUSTON DOWN PILOT AND PASSENGER UNINJURED Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright JOHANNESBURG, October 4. Clouston crashed at Gwelo, 130 miles south of Salisbury. The machine was wrecked, but Clouston and his passenger (Tasker) were uninjured. Owing to engine trouble, Clouston has been able to make only short hops, but he covered 1,400 miles on Saturday, landing safely at Tabora, Abercorn, and Mpika before he was forced down at Otoko, where he took 12 gallons of petrol and restarted for Salisbury. His non-arrival caused great anxiety, and every available plane started at midnight to search. EARLIER PROGRESS ENTEBBE, October 3. Clouston left at 3.30 a.m. for Johannesburg. By short stages he reached Mpika and later resumed on his way to Salisbury. SMITH RETIRES FROM RACE CAIRO, October 3. Smith, after another delay, left for Khartum, where on his arrival he announced his retirement from the race.
