SURF LIFE SAVING ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL REPORT The annual report of Hie Otago branch of the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Association, to be presented at the annual meeting to-night, states:— We have just completed a highly successful and eventful year, and, though only a young and comparatively small body, have fulfilled our part in the Dominion’s surf life saving administration. Entrusted this year with the control of our first national surf championships, we believe that we have fully justified the confidence placed in us by the New Zealand Council. The fixture was generally considered the most successful to date. Our finances are in a very sound position, and the lion, treasurer’s statement shows a cash surplus of £6O 8s 7d. A goodly portion of this amount is represented by the proceeds of an art union run for some three months prior to the national championships. We are also greatly indebted to the Dunedin City Council and the Otago Head Centre of the _ R.L.S.S. for generous donations received during the year. The Government again recognised the splendid work of the Dominion’s surf clubs by a grant to the New Zealand Council. Half of this grant was distributed, on a pro rata basis, amongst the various district associations, our share amounting to £9. During the past season four clubs—Oreti, St. Kilda, St. Clair, and Kurow—affiliated with the association, and gave every support to our activities. This year has seen the St. Kilda Club take a new lease of life, and it is gratifying to find the _ members showing more interest in life _ saving work. All affiliated clubs carried out excellent work during the year, and it is to be hoped that good weathei will enable them to continue during the coming season. The year under review has provided many opportunities for competition. First place, of course,' must be given to the New Zealand -national surf championships, entrusted this year to out association, and held at St. Clair on February 22 and 23. No efforts were spared in preparation for the event, and exceptionally good entries were received, there being eight clubs represented. ■' The interclub competitions conducted by the association during the year also proved most successful, the standard of life saving throughout being of a high order. Oreti Beach was the venue of the Otago championships this season, and, under the control of the local club, the events were run off smoothly and efficiently. The addition of the four-man championship to the programme, necessitated the holding of the fixture on two consecutive days, and in view of the forthcoming national championships more than ordinary interest was taken in the events. Throughout the season the surf clubs maintained a vigilant patrol of the beaches under their jurisdiction, and were instrumental in effecting many fine rescues. Both St, Kilda and St. Clair beaches were allotted a permanent patrolman for a period of eight weeks during the Christmas and New Year vacation, and we are indebted to Messrs G. Withnell (St. Kilda patrol), and H. Devlin (St. Clair patrol) for their efficient services. For financial assistance towards the maintenance of the beach patrols we must again express our thanks to the Dunedin City Council, the St. Kilda Borough Council, the St. Clair Improvement Association, and the St. Kilda Beach Improvement Society. The safety of surfers must be adequately provided for, and we look forward to the day when the beaches will be permanently patrolled during the whole of the bathing season. In conclusion, sincere thanks are offered to all who have rendered financial assistance during the past year; to the St. Clair Surf Life Saving Club tor the use of their committee room; to the honorary officials who so ably acted at the various carnivals and competitions; and to the Press for .valuable publicity.
