TALKING SCORES IN DERBY SILVER RING'S BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE GOLD ROD DISAPPOINTS Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, October 4. Tho Australian Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting was opened at Randwick on Saturday in warm weather, and the attendance was 70,000. The track was in excellent condition. Gold Rod, who was considered to hold a mortgage on the Derby, failed to stay the distance. The race commenced sensationally. Several horses collided at the barrier rise, and a grave smash appeared imminent when Shakespeare fell, but the rest of the field raced away unharmed. Talking was the early pacemaker from Gold Rod and Mala. Passing the mile Gold Rod ran to the front with Mala in close attendance, and they continued running in that order until the turn, where Mala supplanted Gold Rod, and appeared to go on to victory, but Talking, finishing with rare determination, worried the New Zealand colt out of the prize. The Epsom was marred by an unsatisfactory start, and later interference in the straight cost tho winner, Gay Lover, the race. Spcareta raced away to the lead at the barrier rise from Black Laughter, Gay Lover, and Capris. Turning for homo Gay Lover, Black Laughter, and Capris were prominent. The last-named took charge at the distance, but was immediately challenged by Gay Lover. In a desperate finish Gay Lover passed the post with a head advantage, but lost the race duo to interference in the straight. Silver Ring gave a splendid exhibition of his galloping ability in the Spring Stakes. Running in third position throughout, he took charge a furlong from home, and passed the judge with a length advantage, which performance greatly pleased his Metropolitan admirers. Sporting Blood enhanced his Metropolitan prospects by finishing with groat dash to secure third prize. Following are the results:— FIRST HURDLES, 200.-ovs. 2m. H. V.
