SPRING FLOWER SHOW

rAUKKTW-aMIEW SOCIETY The Palmerston and Waihemo Horticultural Society held its annual spring Show in the Palmerston Town Hall on Friday. Mr Charles Rhodes (Dunredin), the judge of the cut flowers, ‘shrubs and decorative sections, commented very favourably on the show, which was the most successful held in recent seasons. Narcissi took pride of place, excellent entries being received, and the qality of the blooms was of a very high standard. The general cut flowers section staged most interesting displays, while the flowering shrubs and trees were also well represented in their classes. TAIERI HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY St. Luke’s Hall, Mosgiel, which housed the annual spring show of the Taieri Horticultural Society on Saturday presented a beautiful appearance with such a largo array of spring blossoms, flowering shrubs, etc. The president (Mr It. Renton) and secretary (Miss AI. Swallow), with an energetic committee, successfully controlled all arrangements. The judges all had a good word to say for the show, and considered it above ihe average of district shows. Mr Chas. Rhodes, who judged the spring flowers, said there was a fine competition in polyanthus. There was a noticeable improvement in the quality of tho narcissi. The decorative work was up to tho standard of the provincial shows. The shrub collection was very fine and tho hyacinths good. There were some very • interesting exhibits of Crown Imperials, rhododendron Marquis of Lothian, etc. The general standard of the show was above tho average. Miss Bond, who judged tho school work and crafts, made favourable comment on the exhibits she judged. Miss J. Pickard, commenting on the decorative work, said:—“ Tho standard of work in both adult and juvenile sections of the floral work was very good, particularly the juvenile section of floating bowls. These showed distinct artistic leanings, and these young people deserve every encouragement. It seems rather a pity that more interest is not taken in the decorated tables, as these give so much scope for originality. A good sense of balance and colour blending was evident in all tho entries, and it was very gratifying to find a definite appearance of lightness in the majority of work displayed.” Tho awards made were as follow: • FLOWERING AND FOLIAGE PLANTS IN POTS.
