UNSETTLED AND SQUALLY The following weather forecast was issued at noon by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, covering the southern districts—Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Tapanui, Winton, Invercargill, Riverton, Orepuki, Bluff, Halfmoon Bay:— One of a series of rather intense westerly depressions crossed the South Island last night, while an anti-cyclone still extends across northern New Zealand. Forecast: Strong^ westerly winds to gales, backing at times to southwesterly.- Weather squally and unsettled, with rain heavy in places. Seas rough. BRILLIANT SPRING WEATHER. Following changeable conditions yesterday, when rain fell intermittently, although insufficient _ for registration, summer sports were introduced to-day under perfect conditions. The sky was cloudless, and although a strong south-westerly wind prevailed early its direction changed to north-westerly, and at 1 p.m. there was a total absence of wind. The respective maxima at 12.30 p.m. to-day and yesterday were 61.8 and 53deg, while the corresponding minima were 54 and 48deg, Over a period of 24 hours yesterday the readings were 62.8 deg maximum and 48deg minimum. Barometric pressure at noon was steady at 29.5 in, as compared with a falling - barometer of 29.7 m yesterday. There was no frost last evening.
