The best-known seaman in the Bass Strait trade, Captain Evan Evans, of the passenger steamer Taroona, will probably relinquish his command in the next few days to take up an appointment as harbour master at Burnie, Tasmania (says an exchange). Captain Evans was born in Portmadoc (Wales) in 1888, and went to sea at the age of 14 years. He served in sail for 10 years, and in 1896, while at Melbourne, he was appointed mate of the famous wool clipper, Loch Lomond. He was later a junior officer in the Atlantic liners, and joined the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand Ltd. in 1898. With the exception of a period of five years, in which ho was a pilot on the River Tamar, he has been with the Union Company since then. His first command was of the steamer Flora, and he is known to thousands of travellers in Tasmania and Victoria as master of the Bass Strait liners Taroona, Oonah, Nairana, and Loongana.
