PUBLIC LIBRARY.

TO TIM EDITOR, Sir, —May I join your happy band of correspondents' 1 I think my solution of this vexed question is the simplest. Allow each ticket holder one book, as formerly, instead of two, and the library shelves will not be so depleted. —I am, etc., More Hopeful. October 1. To THE EDITOR. Sir, —I have hesitated to air my views on the new arrangements here, but if all who grumble do nothing, nothing different will take place. I have been a member of the Public Library from its start, but gave up the struggle three weeks ago, as I became footsore and my neck ached too much to continue walking aimlessly through. For one thing it is ridiculous to allow only three days for reading a new book. Many would pay 3d for a week, but by the new payment system a week would cost 6d, and who could properly read a book such as ‘They Walk in the Town,’ by Priestley, under 10 days at the outside? One does not read all day long and half the night. Poor Mr M'Ewan is sadly missed. The library in his da} 7 was one to be proud of. Now it is disgraceful. No one should he allowed to take out a book except by showing his ticket, and then only one book at a time, when there would he plenty to choose from, but now some shelves are blocked up by cardboard as there are no books to fill them. —I am, etc., Sad and Sorry. October 2.
