OTAGO RUGBY TEAM
ENTERTAINED AT SOCIAL EVENING . GUESTS OF ftSR J. TRENGROVE Members, emergencies, and coaches of the Otago Rugby team that performed so successfully this year and retained the Ranfurly Shield, mere the guests last night in the Southern-Club's pavilion of Mr .1. Trengrovc, mho desired to shorn his personal appreciation of the high standard of Rugby displayed by the team, and the excellent sportsmanship of the members. He presented them mith a special memento in recognition of the successful season just concluded. Hr Perry, in extending a melcomo to those present, expressed appreciation cf .Mr Trengrovo's action in ontertining and honouring the Otago team. He referred to the excellent record of the team during the season, and said that it mas duo principally to the outstanding tcam-mork that Otago had retained the shield. He congratulated the players and coaches on their performance throughout the season. The toast of “ The Otago Rugby Union mas proposed by Mr A. -I. Hollomay and responded to hy Mr V, G. Cavanagh, sen., mho stated horn pleased the union mas at the successful season. He remarked that the union had made a big profit during the season, but its policy bad always been to spend the money it took from the game on the welfare of the players generally, and it mould carry out this policy in the future. “ The Otago Rugby Team ” mas proposed by Mr J. B. Wootton, mho congratulated the players on their excelFcnt performances, and the coaches on their fine work during the past season. The team bad given the public the type of football it enjoyed, and lie assured the players that the union mas very proud of its team. The toast mas responded to by rhe joint captains of the team, H. Simon and .1. Ho re. Mr •!. 0. Pearson, proposing the toast of the host, referred to the line sp irt-
inn; spirit of Mr Trengrovo, and thanked him for his kindly gesture. Replying, .Mr Trengrovo-said he-had appreciated so much the spirit displayed by the players.and the work ol the coaches and trainer (Mr C. ID M'Queen) that ho felt be would likfl to sjiow in a tangible way his appreciation. Presenting players and coachc3 with an engraved miniature football* Mr Treugrove congratulated the team nnd coaches on the fine record put up during the season, and expressed thn hope that the Ranfurly Shield would long remain in Otago. Replying on behalf of the recipients,Mr Cavanagh, jun., thanked Mr Trotw grove for his gifts and his hospitality. During the evening items were given by Messrs K. Murphy, R. Xicpor, u, .Niven, and J. Campbell.,
