BASKETBALL

[By Defence.]

Season Concludes. The following reports conclude the basketball notes for the 1936 season. “Defence” thanks all those who have forwarded contributions for inclusion in the colnmn, and expresses the hope that the succeeding seasons will be as successful as Hie one just concluded. The past season has been marked by the acquisition of the courts at Logan Park, this proving of great value in the organisation of the games. The splendid showing of the Otrfgo team in Christchurch proved that the game in Otago has not deteriorated in any way, while the enthusiasm of the less successful teams in the weekly competition games indicates the high place basketball has in the interests of the young womanhood of the district. West v. South Otago. The second challenge match of the season for the Country Cup was played in Balclutha last week, when West Otago unsuccessfully challenged the present holders, South Otago, who captured the cup from the Otago C grade team on August 1,5, when the score was 13-9 in South Otago’s favour. On the present occasion the score was a very close one, the final result being South Otago 10, West Otago 8. The teams ■were very evenly matched, although they adopted a different type of play. West Otago utilised the long pass, which is not the best style of play, whereas South Otago adopted the short, nippy movement. The South Otago forwards were more erratic in their shooting than their opponents, and lost many opportunities of adding to their score. The West Otago defence, as a whole, was superior to that of the opposing team, although B. Mitchell (South Otago) played a brilliant game. E. Thompson (West Otago' played a spectacular game in the centre. West Otago opened the attack and scored, but*South equalised almost immediately. _ South held the advantage for some time, adding three more goals after a period of rather scappy play. West Otago then dominated the play, adding four goals. Half-time was called with the score standing at 5-4 in its favour. On the resumption of play South Otago increased the pace, and succeeded in breaking up promising West attacks. The score reached 7 all, but from then on until time was called South again controlled the game, scoring three times to West’s once. The standard of play in both the West and South Otago districts shows signs of improvement yearly. Methodist Bible Class Tournament. What is proving to he a highly successful feature of Methodist Bible class activities was illustrated last Saturday, when 10 teams, representing the various city Methodist Bible classes, played in the annual tournament. The tournament was played in two sections, the winners being Dundas Street and Mornington. The game between these two teams was actulWly the best game played, and proved a worthy conclusion to a very successful and happy fixture. The pace was very fast, nncf excellent ■work was witnessed on the part of both teams. Dundas Street proved victorious, the final score being 4-3 in its favour. Misses A.. King, E. Helmkoy, .1.- Carr, and P. M‘Kinlay, and Mr 11. Geddes refereed throughout the afternoon. Positions of Teams. The final positions of the teams in the second, third, fourth, and fifth grades are shown by the following tables;— —Second Grade.—

The trophies won by Triumph. Cadbury, Fry. Hudson (fourth grade), and Elco I. will be presented on Tuesday week, when the Management Committee will meet for its final meeting for the 1936 season.
