NEW ALTITUDE RECORD
TRIUMPH FUR BRITISH AIRCRAFT GREATER HEIGHTS MAY BE ATTAINED ' * (British Official Wireless.) Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright RUGBY, September 29. The successful attempt on the altitude record was observed by official representatives of the Royal Aero Club, and the height attained was officially communicated to the Ministry by the club. It was arrived at from an examination by the National Physical Laboratory ot the sealed barotermographs, which were carried in the wings of the aeroplane. The figures are subject to the usual confirmation and acceptance_ by the Federation Aeronatiquo Internationale, to which application will be made for recognition or the record. This is the first occasion on which a Royal Air Force_ machine has attempted to beat the altitude record, and nigh praise is due to the pilot and the constructors of the aircraft, the engine, and the special equipment, all of which are of British design and manufacture. The aeroplane and the engine were constructed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company, and was ordered by the Air Ministry in 1934 with a view to tho exploration of special problems involved in the operation of aircraft and the functioning of aircraft equipment and instruments at extreme altitudes, and this important, work will be pursued in duo course. With further experience it is hoped that still greater heights may be attained by this new aircraft. THE KING’S CONGRATULATIONS LONDON, September 30.
