EVASION OF CUSTOMS DUTY

SEAMEN CAUGHT IN THE ACT FATHERLY TALK FROM COLLECTOR [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, October 1. Several seamen this week have appeared before the Collector of Customs ( J. M'lntosli), who has power to deal summarily with cases of evasion of payment of the duty, a party of seamen who appeared this morning having been met at: the landing by three Customs officers when they came ashore by launch from a ship anchored in the stream. After a search the officers took possessipn of several bottles of gin and whisky, silk stockings, cigarettes, cigars, dolls, and toys. Tho duty payable amounted to only a few shilling's, but had they been taken to court the seamen would have been liable to a fine of at least £2O.

They gladly signed confessions, paid the duty, and listened to a fatherly talk by Mr M'lntosh, who warned them that, if caught again, they would be taken to court.
