UNIFORMITY IN GROCERY TRADE DOMINION FIXATION SOUGHT IN NORTH A report in a northern paper states that an endeavour is being made to organise a deputation representing employers and employees in the grocery trade throughout the Dominion to ask the Government to amend the Shops and Offices Act in the direction of fixing the opening and closing hours of grocers’ shops. . The question was referred to Jur A. S. Cookson, secretary of the Master Grocers’ Association, who said that nothing had been, heard of the matter here, where all grocers employing labour had been circularised asking them to adopt uniform hours which had been fixed by the local association, these had been accepted by all grocers, and were now being observed. In Wellington a meeting was held of representatives of the Wellington Chain Grocery Stores Association, the Wellington Master Grocers’ Association, and tho Wellington Grocery Employees’ Union, when it was decided to recommend to the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, that shop hours should be as follow Monday to Thursday, 8.30 a.m. to 5.15 p.m. ; Friday, 8.30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, 8.30 a.m. to noon. Mr Cookson said that the hours adopted in Dunedin were from 9 a.m. to 5 30 p-m. from Mondays to lliursdays; 8.45 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays; and 8.15 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
