SOCIAL AND PERSONAL
Dunedin Repertory Society’s Social. The Repertory Society held another of its very enjoyable monthly social evenings bn Monday last in the Concert Chamber, which was filled to capacity with an enthusiastic audience. The decorations, which were composed entirely of spring flowers, were most effective, and gave the hall a very gay appearance. Mrs Richard Hudson (president of the society) came before the curtains to welcome members and their friends, and to announce that the next public production would be Clemence Dane’s ‘ Bill of Divorcement,’ to be presented in His Majesty’s Theatre from November 11 to 14 . She took the opportunity of congratulating Mr Russell-Wood on the very excellent presentation of 4 Paolo and Francesca,’ which she had at the PI ay box, the audience endorsing her words by acclamation. She also referred to the coming arts ball, which is to take place on October 8, sponsored by the Repertory Society. The decorations and lighting for the ball are to be on a lavish scale, and the ballets, under the direction of Miss Barbara Williams, will t»e something quite different .from a spectacular point of view. The music is to be the best that Dunediii can provide. In answer to many inquiries, she stated that the gallery would be open to spectators. The programme for the evening consisted of four one-act plays, bringing forward 28 players, of whom nine were quite new to stage work. The first play,
4 My Kingdom for a —,’ was produced by Miss Anita Winkel, the parts I 'Hg taken by Misses Myra Lord, Olga Manning, Norma Brown, Geraldine Hamer, Doris Turnbull, Jean Lister, Clare Mirams, Cathie Pilling, Vera Hamilton, and Mr Boland Watson as the announcer. The play was an interesting one, and several performers made their first appearance. The second play, 4 Do it Now,’ was produced by Miss Shiela Neilson, and provided some amusing situations. In this the parts were played by Mrs A. A. Fairbairn, Mrs Donaldson, Misses Ethel and Nancy Taylor, Stella Fitchett, and Messrs Andrew Mundy, Maurice Chrystall, George Fenwick, Ken Donaldson, and Reg. Piper. Mr Aubrey Stephens, the producer of the third play, ‘ In the Shadow of the Glen,’ by the Irish playwright, John M. Synge, is to be congratulated on his choice of play and on its excellent pro duction. It is very delightful to have a play of such literary merit presented in such an able manner. The cast was well chosen, the honours perhaps going to Mrs O’Sullivan, whoso soft Irish voice was well suited to the part of Norah Burke. Mr Frank Lanyon played the part of Daniel Burke in a convincing manner, while the Michael Dara of Mr D. Finlayson and the tramp of Dr G. E. Moloney were. both good studies. The stage properties were carefully chosen, and the inside of an Irish cabin well suggested; The programme was concluded with ‘ The Lovely Miracle,’ under the direction of Miss Winkel. The parts in this play were taken by Mrs O’Sullivan, Miss Elsie MTeak, Miss Joyce Messent, and Mr Jack Johnson. The play was full of humour, and the audience was quick to show its appreciation of a‘thoroughly artistic performance. Supper was served, and an hour’s, dancing concluded the evening.
