SPRING SHOWS
DISPLAY AT OAMARU SOME OUTSTANDING BLOOMS The annual spring show of the North Otago Horticultural Society was held in the Oamaru Drill Hall yesterday, and attracted good attendances at all sessions. The display was excellent, and, in the opinion of the show judge (Mr Hamel), was the best all-round exhibition seen here for many years. The narcissi, in particular, were outstanding, being clean and well grown, and showing good cultivation. The season in Oamaru has been particularly good to date, and no doubt this had a beneficial effect on the general growth of the plants. The judge considered that the champion blooms in the various classes would be hard to beat at any show. The champion bloom of the show was a remarkable flower (Giant Leedsii Mytelene), and the Beersheba was a very good second. Both blooms were exhibited by Mrs F. W. Jones (Waimate). The coloured cup varieties, however, were not so numerous, but made a conspicuous display nevertheless. The polyanthus and primroses were of extraordinary quality, and, in the opinion of the judge, were the finest he had seen in 40 years, the orange shades being especially fine. The hyacinths, although, not so numerour, had splendid quality, and as usual, there was keen competition in the collection of cut flowers. Six competitors made a very good display of flowering shrubs, which were a feature of the show.
Another attraction was 1 Iris Suzanne,’ exhibited for the first time in Oamaru by Mrs J. J. Stott, of Maruakoa. This was a beautiful crepe grey coloured flower of the flag iris variety, and was admired on all sides.
The children’s section was again well supported with a well-arranged display of flowers. Mrs It. K. Ireland gained first place in the Buckley Cup competition, with 37 points, followed by Mrs W. Macaulay, with 32 points. Under the direction of the curator of the Oamaru Gardens (Mr J. Tait) an elaborate display of plants, blooms, and flowering shrubs and other exhibits was staged, and excited much attention. The challenge cup exhibits by the Eveline Women’s Institute and the Wesley Girls’ Bible Class were artistically arranged. Awards:— DECORATIVE. Judge: Miss Stronach, Small decorated table. BALCLUTHA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY GOOD DISPLAY OF NAUCISSI The annual spring show under the auspices of the Balclutha Horticultural Society was held in the Britannia Theatre yesterday. Entries totalled 213, and this number would no doubt have been considerably increased had it not been that very rough and wintry weather was experienced on Monday and damaged many blooms. The features of the show were the narcissi and polyanthus classes, in which there was keen competition. Stock and wallflower also made a good showing. The decorative section was not strong, but there were some very nice exhibits. The judges were well pleased with tho quality forward, and found it difficult to allocate awards in some classes. In addition to the show exhibits, there were some really beautiful displays for “ exhibition only,” notably the collection of cut flowers by Mr J. Sinclair and the display of narcissi by Mr A. S. MTntosh, In addition to the horticultural exhibits there _w T as again included an industrial section, and in this, although the entries were not up to the usual, there was some particularly nice work, the judges being very pleased with it all. The “ bays ” this year were shown only by the W. 1., and the three forward reflected great credit on those re sponsible The variety of the articles was remarkable, and was a splendid ad vertisement for tho women of town and district. The staging arrangements were good, and showed everything off to the best advantage. The officials all worked well and tho show generally was quite a success.
