FIRST RUGBY CLUB
HONOUR CLAIMED FOR CHRISTCHURCH j ; ' i ; [Pee United Pkbm Association.] ! WELLINGTON, September 29. The statement made in a recent letter to the New Zealand Rugby Union by Mr K. C. Tennent, of Woodville, concerning the formation of the first Rugby footbau club in the Dominion is challenged by a newspaper correspondent, who says: “Mr Tennent is wrong in saying that the club he assisted to form in Nelson in 1868 was the first football club in New Zealand. The Christchurch Football Club was fbrmed in 1863. This club lost the records of its first -four years, so the dates were carried from 1867. when the existing records began.” : ‘ The correspondent adds, that confirmation is to be found in old newspaper files of the ’sixties. Actually football was played in Christchurch and Lyttelton ! in 1862, and rules for the game were drawn up at Christ’s College that year.
