WINGATUI AFIRE
NINE HOURS STEAM FROM NAPIER PRESSING FOR PORT AT FULL SPEED [Paa Ukitbd Prsss Association.] NAPIER, September 29. The Union vessel Wingatui isrsported on fire, nine hours’ steam from Napier. The vessel is being pressed to her utmost in order to secure the assistance of fire-fighting appliances. It is believed that the outbreak is in No. 3 hold, where the general cargo is on fire. The vessel is due at Napier at 8 to-night. LIGHTKEEFER'S REPORT NO SIGN OF STEAMER The Press Association advises that telephone inquiries were made to Castjepoint and Blackhead, which are adjacent to the Wingatui’s course, but no trace had been seen of the vessel. The lightbousekeeper at Castlepoint reported that the Wingatui should have passed his lookout at 4 o clock this morning. Weather conditions at both places were squally. 'ONLY SMOULDERING MAY BE SUBDUED BEFORE ARRIVAL WELLINGTON, September 29. _ The U.S.S. head office reports that it is understood the Wingatui’s cargo is smouldering, and the situation is not serious at present. The fire may he subdued before the Wingatui reaches port. _
