ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY

1 MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The Council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society met last evening, those present being Messrs E. E. Turner (chairman), TV Long, C. A. Wilson, H. G. Williams, G. Howes, A. J. White, G. Porter, W. G. Young, J. Hutchison, W. H. Wilson, J. .Maconie, S. H, Barnes, W. Raffills, M. Barratt, A. B. Welch, R. Fountain, and S. F. Ahum.; GAME COMMITTEE. A letter from the secretary of the Auckland Society advised that more shooting licenses, were sold this year, when the fee was 255, than last year, when it was 20s. The letter also stated that for the time being the society was dropping the idea of importing American mallard ducks, owing to tho conditions imposed by the Minister of Internal Affairs. Discussing the Game Committee’s report, Mr Williams stated that tho Auckland Society had been permitted by the Minister of Internal Affairs (tho Hon. W. E. Parry) to import 50 pairs of American mallard ducks. The Auckland Society had originally made application for 200 pairs, hut the American Government authorities had refused to permit their export. The society interested the Minister of Internal Affairs, and it was finally arranged that 50 pairs would be allowed to be shipped to Auckland before October 30. No more would be exported under any circumstances, which meant that no other societies could obtain any. A supply of eggs would be ready by . August next, and he suggested that the Otago Society take steps to procure a number.'—lt was decided to congratulate the Auckland Society on securing the American and New Zealand bans on mallard ducks removed, and that the Otago Society write promptly to obtain eggs. A motion that a letter be sent to the Minister of Internal, Affairs thanking him for his efforts in connection with the importation was carried. Mr H. G. Williams was congratulated upon his assiduous efforts to promote the importation _ of American mallard ducks, this being recorded in ■ tho minutes. The Game Committee’s report was adopted.' ANGLING COMMITTEE. Tho report of the Angling Commits tee was submitted. It was recommended by tho hatchery curator that 5,000 rainbow trout fry be liberated in the Leith and the remainder available into the river below the dam. A letter ■ was received advising- that the run of spawning fish in Lake Hayes “appfecEfed- to be finished. The - president, of the Gore District Angling Club (Mr O. J. Howells) wrote thanking the Otago Society for the promised donation of £6 towards the cost of putting in two damsj by Mr Mutch, of Waikaia, and saying that the Southland Society was contributing a like amount. An application was made for the usual medal for competition on the Pomahaka River by Mr H. J. Hay, the secretary of the Tapanui Anglers’ Socity. It was decided that the letter be approved and the society be informed that more scale samples were desired from that river. The report was adopted. “SINGLE RIVER” LICENSES. A communication was received from the Department of Internal Affairs advising the new schedule -of fishing licenses. On the grounds that a serious depletion of revenue would.be caused the society by their issue, tho members of the council took exception to the inclusion of provision for “single river licenses It was decided to inquire from the department if the term “ single river ” was applicable to a lake or lagoon. HONORARY RANGERS. The secretary having reported that the list of honorary rangers had been inspected, it was suggested by Mr Barnes that the Minister be asked to terminate the warrants of all these officers, giving them an opportunity of application for reappointment. A motion to this effect was carried.
