SUNDAY NIGHT CONCERTS

FURTHER PRETEST RECORDED MAYOR'S SHARP COMMENT “ These protests are being made without any rhyme or reason,” declared the mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) when another protest was recorded against the City Council granting permits for Sunday night concerts at last night’s meeting. The protest came from the parish of St. Stephen’s Church. The Mayor said that for three years i it had been the practice of the council to grant permits for two Sunday night ’ concerts each week in the city and to consider applications for concerts in suburban areas. “ Yet we get all these protests,” he said. Cr W. Begg: That has nothing to do with the protest before us. The Mayor: These protests are made without any rhyme or reason.

Cr Allen: I don’t remember the custom mentioned bythe mayor. The Mayor: It is in the records. Cr Allen said that, in view of. his resolution being defeated at the last meeting, he could do nothing else but to move that the letter be received, and St. Stephen’s Church be thanked for the letter. There was no seconder for the motion, and it was decided that the protest bo noted. . ' . * When an application from the non. secretary, Christmas Cheer Committee of the South Dunedin Unemployed Association for a permit to hold a concert on October 11 came forward Cr W. Begg asked whether there would be any unemployed in the city by. Christmas time. ■ Voices: We hope not. • The Mayor; The South Dunedin Unemployed Association has provided » Christmas treat for children ever since I have been in office. Cr Begg: What about the unemployed? , , The Mayor: The unemployed, hke the poor, are always with us and they will have to be cared for as long as they exist. The application was granted.
