CSALLA TRIBES' PETITIONS BRITISH MANDATE WASTED Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright GENEVA, September 27. In order to record Britain's position regarding two petitions by Galla tribes in Western Abyssinia, Mr Eden has sent a letter to M. Avenol, SecretaryGeneral of the League, stating that certain chiefs sought the aid of the British Consul at Gore in June and July, and also the Sudan Commissioner at Gambelila, in asking the League to confer a Western Abyssinian mandate on Britain, which, however, informed the chiefs that she Was not in a position to accept such a mandate. The Sultan Gumai also petitioned regarding alleged depredations by Amharic soldiers at Jimma. The British agent appointed at Jimma was instructed to protect foreigners. He reported on September 9 that the situation was uneasy owing to strainCjd relatione between the Amharaa and the Gallas, but the chiefs were protecting missionaries.
