BOMBS ON BILBAO
FIERCE INSURGENT ATTACK HUNDREDS OF CASUALTIES LOYALIST VICTORY REAR TOLEDO Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SAN SEBASTIAN, September 26. The insurgents dropped hundreds of bombs on Bilbao yesterday, setting *fire to many buildings, including the administrative headquarters, and damaging the British Consulate. There were hundreds of casualties. The bombardment will be repeated until the city surrenders. The Government troops counterattacked, supported by aircraft, and forced the rebels two miles back from Torrijos after they had approached within two miles of Toledo, capturing the villages of Villamiel and Vargas. The loyalist counter-attack resulted in the annihilation of 400 Moors by aerial bombardment and the destruction of two rebel bombing planes. CONFLICTING REPORTS WHEREABOUTS OF PRESIDENT NEW YORK, September 25. According to a ‘ New York Times ' despatch from Buenos Aires, the President (Senor Azana) has taken refuge in the Argentine Embassy at Madrid. Sources in close touch with. the Argentine Government declared that the President was not at the embassy. Reports declare that the situation in the capital is chaotic.. CHARGES Of FOREIGN AID MEMORANDUM TO LEAGUE GENEVA, September 26. Don Del Vayo has sent a memorandum to the League substantiating his charges of foreign aid to the Spanish rebels. ~ LOYALIST AIR ACE KILLED MADRID, September 27. (Received September 28, at 11 a.m-) A loyalist, Captain Mellado, with a record of bringing down 16 rebel aeroplanes, was killed in an aerial battle with five fighting planet. ANDO|pA ASKS FOR PROTECTION PARIS, September 27. The General Council of Andorra has sought French protection, and as a result a French military detachment has been despatched to occupy Andorra close to the Spanish frontier. [A previous message stated: The Council of the General Assembly of Andorra, the Pyrenean State between France andi Spain, with an area ot suo square miles, under the joint suzerainty of the French President and the Span-, ish Bishop of Urgel, with a standing army of seven men, decided by 12 votes to 11 not to seek French aid in the event of an Anarchist invasion.]
