SATURDAY’S RACING

Four Dominion Meetings Increases in Investments Sustained New Zealanders Score in Australia There were, lour meetings, in the Dominion on Saturday T-Greraldine, Martin, Napier Park, and Waikato (trots). The toialisator, an,excellent barometer of the financial times, handled an aggregate of £51,399, against a total; of £34,835 10s for the same'meetings last year. At Waikato the investments were nearly double. Two New Zealand horses —Hands Up and loud Applause •—scored decisive wins in Australia. Keith Voitre, the New Zealand jockey, broke his leg when Valiant Chief fell .at the ! Moonee Valley Meeting.;

THE GERALDINE MEETING DAVOLO WINS PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP KATBRH CHAHPttN HACK 'After light showers on Friday, which did not affect the conditions for the concluding day of the Geraldine Racing Club’s Annual Meeting; the weather was again bright sunshine, and, attracted by the prospects of a good day’s sport, there was a record attendance, including, a number, of visitors from the West, Coast and Otago. Excepting in the Hurdle Race the fields were large, and most of _the finishes were,. close and interesting. Form in a, number of instates was most difficult to follow, several horses that raced prominently on the first day racing very badly, and still more who failed on the first day showed marked improvement in their form. Backers were a little more fortunate than on the opening day, two first favourites prevailing, but Mr F. C. Thomas’s handicapping concealed winners well oh both days. The, only unsatisfactory part of a splendidly conducted meeting was the starting, the official in charge of > the barrier having little control over the riders, and there was scarcely one good despatch made during the two days. fine money offering was a severe test t¥ tho 'totalisator 'accommodation, but again pifirctuality was ' well' -"observed for the first seven races, but on the last race the time for closing the machine had to be extended about 10 minutes. During the afternoon £ll,763 was handled, as compared with £9,317 10s last year, making a total for fho meeting of £20,-839, an increase of £4,253 10s. . Acena and Chrysology drew four lengths clear of Redolent, Chrysology making a bad jump at the first anti third hurdles. Turning out of the straight Acena went to the front, but at the/ next hurdle Redolent outjumped him and took the lead. Then Santoft ran up to Redolent at the far turn, and, leading him into the straight, beat him home by four lengths. Vitaphone was five lengths away third, Chrysology a poor fourth, and Wexford Bridge last. * * * * Desirable (623), Culotte (488), Orange Bud (396), and Night Wings (237) were the best backed for the Wainui Hack Handicap. Culotte jumped out the smartest, and led Roseman, Desirable, and Radio Star along the back. At the far turn Roseman joined Culotte, and the pair led Desirable and Radio Star into the straight. At the' distance the favourite ran past Culotte, and beat her home by two lengths. Radio Star, -,two lengths away, was third, followed by Orange Bud and Night Wings. The winner was the first favourite to score at the meeting. . • * • • Zincali (751), Pukeuri (286), Windsor Lass (285), and Serene 'Bingen (283) were best backed for the Domain Trot. The favourite drew the front rank, but began badly. Great Don led Mary Aubert, Jambo, and Grattan Girl through the straight. Then Great Don was followed along the back by Windsor Lass, Heather Queen, and Serene Bingen. . This order was not altered round the far turn, and across the top. Windsor Lass was first into the straight from Great Don, Serene Bingen, and Heather Queen. At the distance Windsor Lass was clear, and won by two lengths from Heather Queen, who beat Great Don by a head. Serene Bingen and Mary Aubert were next. *.* * * (533), and Alonipere (379) were best hacked in the President’s Handicap. After a long delay at the start Monipere, on the rails, was badly left. Wino led Gold Cross and Epris out of the straight. At the six furlongs post Wino was just racing clear of Epris, Gold Cross, and Daring Deed, with Golden King tailing the field. At the far turn Wino was still clear, with Monipere, Daring Deed, Gold Cross, and Epns racing in close order. DavoTo got a good run on the rails, and Wino was two lengths in front of Alonipere, Carfex, Gold Cross, Davolo, and Golden King as they turned into the straight. Then Davolo put in a fine run, and just got up in the last stride to beat Wino by a head Golden King was, two lengths away third, just in front of Aletal Bird and Alonipere.

Epic (602), Wild Career (484), Rose of Tralee (484), and Silver Slipper (269) 1 were best backed for the Gladstone Hack Handicap. Silver began very smartly, and quickly drew out two lengths clear of Wine Card, Hose of Tralee, and Patricia Holm. Hose of Tralee was then knocked back, and Silver Slipper was in charge from Silver Lark and Arrownilla racing across the top. Silver Lark joined Silver Slipper on the home turn, and just lasted long enough to beat Rose of Tralee by a short head. The latter put in a great run from the home turn. Arrownilla was half a length away third, a neck in front of Silver Slipper. Epic finished second last. • • • • The bracketed pair, Tapdancer and Dual (457), Shrewdie (424), Irish Aggie (385), Frisco Boy (312), and Marsceres (266) were the best backed for the Winchester Trot. When the field settled down Hytemoana led Lux Lunae, Cam Dillon, and Marsceres, and there was no change until approaching the far turn, when Harold Wrack ran round the leaders and took charge. He led Hytemoana, Lux Lunae, Cam Dillon, and Marsceres across the top. Then Marsceres took charge and led into the straight from Lnx Lunae and Greatfast, and halfway down the straight Frisco Boy put in a good run wide out. Marsceres stayed on to win by a length from Frisco Boy, who beat Greatfast by a short neck, Royal Grattan and Dual next. • • * • Grey Honour (835), Capital (552), Rebel Chief (472), and Gaysome (389), were the best backed in the Steward’s Stakes Handicap. Rebel' Chief next the rails, was chopped out at the start, and Grey Honour, Great Star, and Arena raced together two lengths in front of Arrowrose and Capital to the home turn. Then Great Star, on the outside, dropped out. At the distance both Arrowrose and Gaysome tackled the winner, and the latter appeared to be unlucky not to get through. Arrowrose just got iu> to beat Grey Honour by a head, Gaysome a neck away third, a head in front of Capital. "• 4 • • • Matoru (1,050)', Fiord (890), Queen Dorothy' (581), and Jack- Ahoy (574) were the best backed for the South Canterbury Champion Hack Handicap. Fiord, Convivial, and Pharaohj racing together, led Matoru and Poniard till after rounding for home. Then Pharoah dropped back, and Motoru followed Fiord into the straight. Before reaching the distance Matoru had headed Fiord and led him home by three lengths, with Convivial a length off third and Jack Ahoy and Poniard n«tt.
