JERSEY HERD DESTROYED
JOHNES DISEASE IN HAWEFIA DISTRICT [Pea United Paess Association.] HA WEB A, September 26. Condemned by the Department of Agriculture because of the incidence of Johnes disease, 103 head of Jersey cattle in the Kaupokonui-Otakcho district have been slaughtered as a precaution against the spread of the disease by contagion, for some years past the farm and the herd have been under certain restrictions by the department in an endeavour to eliminate diseased animals one by one, but the infection of the soil made the task difficult. The drastic action in destroying the whole herd resulted from a change of ownership of the herd. Compensation has been arranged under the Jtock Act, and the farm is to be closed to cattle for several years. The incidence of Johnes disease in 12 other herds in the Hawera district is known to the department, which is arrruging for a fully-qualified veterinarian to be stationed here for special work.
