TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING Cr Gow presided at the monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council held at Mosgiel yesterday. REPORTS. The inspector of works (Mr John Garrett) reported for the past month as follows East Taieri Riding.—Gladstone, Ricoarton, and Centre roads had been graded with the power grader. Thirtyseven yards of maintenance gravel from Kirkland’s dump had been run Out on Shand’s road. Tweed street, Cemetery, and Gladstone roads had been surfaced. North Taieri Riding.—The following roads had been surfaced :—Silverstream Valley and Halfway Bush' to Whafe Flat. Forty yards of maintenance gravel from Milner’s pit had been run out on the Racecourse road, Wingatui, Gibson’s to Muir’s, School road, and Gordon road, North Taieri, had been graded with the power grader. Kaikorai Riding.—Fifty-one yards of maintenance metal had been run out on Wilson’s and Blackwood’s roads. This had been blinded with gravel from Milner’s pit. Freeman’s and Fernhill roads had been surfaced, and Kaikorai Valley road had been graded with the power grader. Otokia Riding. Brighton to Sorogg’s Hill, Saddle Hill to Scrogg’s Hill, M'Laren’s Gully and Tukatau roads had been surfaced. Outrnm Riding.—Tho following roads had been surfaced.—Allanton to Berwick, Bruce’s, Loan and Outram to Hindon. Maungatua Riding. Maintenance metal had been run out on the Henley to Berwick road. M'Donald’s and Munro’s roads had been surfaced. All the railway crossing signs had been painted according to regulations. Deep Stream Riding.—General surface work had been carried out, and the power grader was at present grading the roads in the Hindon district. Strath-Taieri Riding.—The gravel on the Sutton to Matarae and Dry Ridge roads had been graded with tho horse grader. Mount Stoker, Mount Ross, and Murray’s roads had been surfaced Main Highways.—No. 2; The section from Mosgiel to West Taieri Church had been graded with the powergrader., Schist metal had been spread on the soft portions between Sutton Stream and Sutton siding. This section was blocked for two days on the section between Traquair and Clarks owing to the heavy snowstorm during the month. No'. 3: Grading and general surface work had been carried out. No. 4: Water-tables had been cleaned out, and the road surfaced. No. 5: The section from Green Island Borough boundary to Taieri Mouth had been graded with the power-grader. The high seas during the month had encroached on the road' at Taieri Mouth, and some protective work was being carried out at this place. No. _6: General surface 'work had been carried out. No. 7: One hundred and twelve yards of gravel from Milner’s pit had been run out and the road graded. The report was adopted. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the past month amounted to £985 13s 9d, and the accounts for payment totalled £2,926 14s 6d. The debit balance stood at £1,236 Is 9d. The report was' adopted and the accounts were passed for payment. RATES. • The following motion was moved by the Chairman;—" That, in view of the decision of the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry) to restrict the rating for the current year on the old valuation to Outram Riding and Maungatua Riding only, and the remaining ridings to be rated on the new values, tho resolution passed at. the last meeting of the council to strike a general rate of 2d in the £ on the old valuations, with a 20 per cent, reduction over the whole county, be rescinded, and the question of rating be again considered.”—The motion was seconded by Cr Kirk and carried. The following revised rates were struck:—North Taieri, East Taieri, Kaikorai, and Otokia ridings, IJd in the £; Deep Stream and Strath-Taieri ridings, l}d in the £ on the new valuation ; Outram and Maungatua ridings, IJd in the £ on the old valuation. CORRESPONDENCE, Vouchers were received as follows— Main Highways refund, £9B 14s lid.Noted. A copy of the Order in Council exempting Jones’s road, Brighton, was received. The Under-Secretary, Internal Affairs Department, directed attention to the Local Elections and Polls Act Amendment, 1936.—Received. A circular letter was read advising that each provincial district should make its own arrangements for the New Zealand Centennial, 1940.—Noted. An invitation was received from the Otago Aero Club to be present at the annual meeting.—Received. The Otago Expansion League applied for an annual grant to assist the league’s work.—Received. The Town Clerk, Mosgiel, made formal application for permission to trim back willows on Silverstream bank.— Granted, provided willow trimmings were burnt. The Brighton Ratepayers’ Association expressed pleasure at the progress of arrangements for sealing Green Island-Brighton road.—Received. R. C. Robinson, Lambhill, and others petitioned for a light traffic bridge across Taieri River to Hindon railway road.—Request declined. Fred Jones, Scrogg’s Hill, asked for attention to a slip and gravelling on the Brighton-Scrogg’s Hill road.— Tho inspector reported that this matter had been attended to. Lodge Strath Taieri drew attention to a broken culvert at the entrance to its property. —A new box culvert to be inserted, provided the lodge supplied the material. A. J. Bush (Otokia) wrote asking the council to spread some metal on the road leading to his place, as it was impassable in wet weather.—Held over in the meantime." W. Waldron (Brighton) wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the road to bis property, and stating that he -would be prepared to cart the gravel and supply tools for the work.— Request granted. The Manager of the Koa Bacon Factory applied for permission to establish a pig farm at Fairfield on part of sections 32, 33, 34, 35, and 36, comprising 10a 3r 22p.—A protest against the granting of the permit was lodged by Mrs John Howell, a resident in an adjoining property. —The Taieri County Health Inspector reported that the residence was over 160 ft from the site of tho styes, and ho did not think that the styes would cause any nuisance.— The application was granted. GENERAL. The adjourned quarterly meeting of tho Allanton and Maungatua Domain Boards was held at the conclusion of the council meeting. The Auditor-General returned the boards’ balance sheet certified.
