BRIGADE NOTES The Hillside Railway Division’s annual inspection and competitions were held in the Drill Hall. A large number of friends and spectators were present to witness an interesting display by the members. Ass. Com. Col. P. H. Morey and Dist. Supt. J. C. White conducted the inspection of the 40 members on parade. Six teams entered the various competitions, with the following results: — Hillside, Efficiency Cup (judges, Dr Clark Hanan and Col. P. H. Morey).—D team—Messrs M'Ewan, Gaspar, Croft and Dow (117 points), 1; F team —Messrs Ford, M. Ford, J. G. Wilkes, and M'lntosh (116 J), 2. Hobbv Shield (judge, Dr Monheimer)*. —E team —Messrs Dickson, Henderson, Lough, Fowler (90), 1; C team —Messrs Robertson, Earland, Mosley, Burridge (83 points), 2. Fox Cup (judge, Mrs Pox). —Messrs M'Pherson and M'Ewan (30), 1 (equal) ; Mosley 29), 3. Fox Medal (judge, Mrs Fox). —W. Burridge (29i), 1. „ Swanson Trophy (judges, Dist, Supt. J. 0. White and Dist. In the evening the annual social a|m dance was held in the Hillside Social Hall, Cargill road, when representatives from all the local divisions were present as guests of the evening. Among those present were Chief. Com. Col. G. Barclay and Mrs Barclay, Ass. Com. Col. P. H. Morey and Mrs Morey, Dist. Supt. J. C. White, Dist. Off. G. Swanson and Mrs Swanson, Dist. Off. H. 0. Marsh and Mrs Marsh, Corps Supt. G: R. Syder and Mrs Syder, Corps Off. W. Hobby,- Lady Supt. Mrs
Fox, Lady Supt. Mrs Homer, Div. Supt. J. Penson and Mrs Penson, Div. Supt, D. M'Fie. Presenting the trophies to the winning squads, Col. Barclay congratulated the div. supt. (Mr J. Penson) on the efficiency of the division and also on the outstanding record of the members in competition work. Items adding to the enjoyment of the evening were contributed as follows: — Misses Henderson and Johnstone, tap dancing; Messrs Reno and White, humorous dialogue. After supper was served, dancing was indulged in to a late hour, when the singing of 4 Auld Lang Syne ’ brought a most enjoyable evening to a close. The usual fortnightly meeting was held on Monday, September 14. Supt. J. Penson presiding over an attendance of 14 members. Also present was Corps Supt. G. R. Syder. Letters of congratulation were received from various divisions and officers of the brigade commenting on the success of the annual competitions. Mr Syder congratulated the superintendent on the efficient and businesslike manner in which he conducted the meeting, and also thanked the division for the assistance rendered on the sports grounds during the winter months, as well as at the Central Fire Station. The re-examination of the Dunedin Nursing Division, conducted by Dr J. Fulton, was held on September 14, with a full muster of members present. Dr Fulton congratulated the div. supt. (Miss Steedman) on the efficiency of the division, and also expressed pleasure at the results of the examination, all members gaining their respective certificates. On Monday, Sept. 21, the division was very pleased to welcome two members from the. No. 1 . Loco. Division, who were present to assist the teams practising for the interdistrict competitions, and the thanks of the members went to these members for the keen interest taken in the work.. The Christchurch competitions, which include two interdistrict events, will take place on Saturday, October 3, under the same conditions as last year. The Challenge Cup is open to nursing divisions, and the St. John Memorial Cup, which replaces the Katherine Peek Memorial Cup, is open to both nursing and ambulance divisions. Teams desirous of entering for these events should get in touch with the district secretary without delay. , Very appreciative reference to the services rendered to the Order of St. John by Mr T. Belworthy, district superintendent of the Otago district, has been received from the authorities at St. John’s Gate, London. Mr Belworthy recently retired from his position after service extending over a good many years. As he has'now transferred to the reserve, it is pleasing. to know that his lengthy experience will not be altogether lost to the brigade. The St. John Ladies’ Guild has just brought its activities for the 1936. season to a close. Throughout the winter months the members have held their weekly meetings and have made up a large quantity of clothing and comforts, which will be distributed to the poor and needy by Nurse Mitchell and her assistant district nurses of St. John.,
