STREET IMPROVEMENTS

HIGHGATE AND CITY ROAD RECOMMENDATIONS OF WORKS COMMITTEE The Works' Committee of the City Council reports that consequent upon the abandonment of the Roslyn electric tramway service and the removal of the rails from Highgate and City road it is desirable that the area from which the rails have been removed be reconditioned and sealed. The committee recommends that this work bo put in hand as soon as possible. The estimated cost is as follows: — Highgate section: (1) Reconditioning tram track area to a satisfactory macadam surface, £529; (2) reconditioning works department area adjoining tram tracks to a satisfactory macadam surface, £667; (3) sealing after reconditioning, £230. City road area: (1) Reconditioning tram track area to a satisfactory macadam surface, £B2; (2) sealing after reconditioning, £52. Grand total, £1,560. As no provision has been made in the current year’s allocations to meet this cost, the financial aspect of the matter was referred to the Finance Committee for consideration, that committee reporting as follows: In terms of the Standing Orders consideration has been given to a reference from the Works Committee regarding an expenditure of £1,560 in connection with the work of reconditioning Highgate consequent upon the removal of the tramway tracks. No provision has been made for the expenditure in the department’s allocations for the year, but, as the work appears to be of pressing urgency, it is recommended that the cost be provided for out of the unexpended balance available in the special fund provided for subsidising the pay of relief workers. The course proposed is preferable to disturbing the public works vote or calling upon the tramways department to make a contribution to the cost.
