From ‘ Star ’ Files. The race for the rowing championship of the world took place over the usual championship course from Putney to Mortlake. The race was witnessed by a vast assembly of people, W. Beach, after a tremendous struggle, defeating J. Gaudaur by three lengths. • * * • The Earl of Dalkeith was accidentally shot dead in the Scottish Highlands while pursuing a stag. * A foreign lady, who lost £12,000 at the Monte Carlo gambling tables, committed suicide in a village near there on August 22. This is the sixty-seventh case of self-murder since the opening of the Monte Carlo season. « tt • ♦ The American yacht Mayflower has been selected to defend the American Cup against the English yacht Galatea in the race to take place in September next The owner of the English yacht Galatea has challenged the crack American yacht to a race to Bermuda and back. The challenge will not probably be accepted. « • « * Hawke’s Bay defeated the New South Wales representative Rugby team by 14 points to 6. The return match between New South Wales and Auckland was won by the latter team by 14 points to 4. * • * • The following is a copy of a claim arising out of the recent heavy rains sent m to the City Council: —“ Mr culbart and makeing it new—replacing pills under the house and makeing good foundation of chimney in your section new culbart 40ft long, £22 Is.” * * » * Cholera has broken out in Budapest, and some deaths are already reported. * • The death is announced of Hon. J. Bathgate. Mr Bathgate came to Otago from Peebles about 18G11 to manage the Bank of Otago, then being started. He had previously held a responsible position at Peebles, and had been procura-tor-fiscal of that place. His son, Mr A. Bathgate, is a solicitor practising in Dunedin, and Messrs J. E. Denniston and J. F. Woodhouso (solicitors! are sons-in-law. « « • • The Victorian Parliament voted £I,OOO to the widow of Marcus Clarke, in recognition of her husband’s literary labours Mr Clarke was the author of ‘ For the Term of H:s Natural Life.’ * * * • The Hon. A. ds B. Brandon, M.L.C., died in Wellington, at the ago of 76. Mr Brandon arrived in Wellington in 1840, coming out in connection with the Now Zealand Colonising Company. He occupied the position of provincial solicitor during Dr Featherston’s superintendeney. In 1858 he was elected to represent Wellington country districts in the Assembly, and held this seat till the General Election of 1881. In 188-'l he was called to the Legislative Assembly. Deceased was president of the Wellington Club and of the Wellington Law Society.
