MAYFAIR
A rollicking story of adventure is presented in ‘ Captain Blood,’ a Warner Brothers’ production, which occupies pride of place on the current programme at the Mayfair. With a background! created by the thunder of cannon, the clash of rapier and cutlass, and the creak of ships’ yards straining under full sail, the story of Dr Peter Blood, whoso destiny led him into slavery and thence to buccaneer triumphs and the Governorship of a West Indian island, was followed by last night’s audience amid increasing excitement. The title role is played by Errdl Flynn, an Australian actor, who gives a fine performance in his first American picture. He moves through this story qjf revolt and piracy in the days of James 11. with an eloquence, a dignity, and a swaggering bravado which rank with the beet the screen has to offer. Flynn receives excellent support from a large, chosen cast, among whom Lionel Atwill, Bose Alexander, Guy Kibbec, andi Basil Rathbonc have outstanding individual scenes. Olivia do Havilland makes a charming heroine. An entertaining programme of short subjects is shown in support.
