COMMUNITY SING

MANY TURNED AWAY. With each week greater patronage is accorded the community sings in the Strand Theatre, and as the season advances the sings themselves are brighter / and better. To-day’s function was another delightful effort on the part of the committee, as a result .of which the mayor’s fund for the relief of distress was. augmented to the extent of £2B. The special item to-day was rendered by a distinguished performer, Miss Bertha Rawlinson, Mus., Bac., who has just returned from Sydney, where she has won many prizes, at the competitions, including the Melba Cup. She was accorded an ovation. • Her selections were ‘ Land of Hope and Glory * and ‘ The Irish Jaunting Car.’ The West Coast Rugby team, which is to meet Otago/to-morrow, attended and received a warm welcome. The manager. Mi A. • Adams, returned thanks on behalf of the team and also for the gift of a mascot which was made by.. Mr H. P. Desmoulins. . Johnnie Here, the captain of the Otago team, was present to receive:the community singers’ congratulations for the splendid performance of. his team this year, l and was presented with a mascot for himself amid much applause. D. ■ Trevathan ■ was presented with a special kewpie from a lady admirer. The mascot was bought in Dunedin at one of the sings last year and was taken to • Christchurch by its purchaser on the occasion of the Otago-Canterbury match last year. It has since been at all the Ranfurly Shield matches, and the lady thought it fitting to give it to Mr Trevathan with her best wishes} hoping that he would bring his scoring total to 200 points to-morrow. , Mr R. W., Sinclair, the chairman of the Sing Committee, presented Cr W. H. Shepherd with the third £IOO for this season, in the absence of the mayor. Mr Sinclair then made a.special appeal to listeners, stating that for every £1 contributed next week, he would subsidise it to bring it to a guinea.

The sing was again under the popular leadership of Mr H. P. Desmoulins, and Mr A. Pettitt was in his usual place at the piano. Next week, Mr Arthur Macdonald has consented 'to assist, as it is the big Scottish day.
